All-Day Courses for 2010
What’s the Story, Portland?
What kind of story can you tell about Portland and the interesting people who live here when you have a digital audio recorder, time to roam the streets, and a story to tell? Can you get the story of the local homeless guy? How about what it is like to be the garbage collector? Or, perhaps what other teenagers think about life in Portland? Join this Winterim and spend the week listening to programs from This American Life, generating story ideas, going to places like the Pearl District and Chinatown to interview people, and then returning to school to edit the recordings, add music and produce your own podcast in mp3 format for publication. By the end of the week, you will have learned how to record an interview and how to edit, using Audacity and other production software, each interview on the computer. You will also listen to many excellent and funny stories that have already been published on radio.

We will head to the fabric store on our first day together and choose material and buy supplies. While sewing we can listen to music or watch DVDs. Cooking with Heat (not thermal)
Cooking with heat refers to chili peppers, peppercorns, horseradish, Wasabi, mustard, garlic, and onions. It does not refer to temperature. Most cultures use heat in their food, especially tropical and sub-tropical cultures. We will examine the various kinds of plants that provide heat, cultural uses for a number of them, the chemistry and botany of culinary heat, and of course ways that culinary heat is used. Students will prepare meals of several dishes each day. Each student will receive a copy of Dave DeWitt and Nancy Gerlach's The Spicy Food Lover’s Bible: The Ultimate Guide to Buying, Growing, Storing, and Using the Key Ingredients That Give Food Spice, with More Than 250 Recipes From Around the World, Stewart, Taborg, and Chang. Arts in Portland!
Explore the rich variety of arts of all types around our city. We will visit galleries, museums and an artist's studio, search out public art, tour a theater, see whatever dance, plays and music we can schedule, do some art ourselves, and find an arts-related service project. Student preferences will guide what exact activities, performances and workshops we choose, so anyone signing up should be prepared to help with all of the stages of planning.

Dance in a Week
Dancing is a life-time exercise but this course will be special: Work with a professional dancer and a choreographer to create, learn and perform a dance which OES will then own. Performance opportunities outside of Winterim might include Gathering and LS and MS assemblies. Dancing is used by some college sports programs to teach balance, grace, and efficient use of the body. This will be collaborative—your chance to dance an original dance, in a group, with grace. Unfortunately, there is not room for all.

Arty Cartoons, or How Stick Figures Can Represent Existential Questions In Uncertain Times
In this class, we will take a look at animated shorts and movies from the point of view of artwork as well as a way to gauge the cultural sensibilities of the time. This full-day course will have plenty of visual examples (including shorts from Warner Brothers, Universal, Disney and more) to enlighten everyone on the different ways animated films have been done since the beginning of motion pictures. In addition to discussion oriented viewing of classic and modern animation (including some from foreign countries), the students will each research a specific studio/artist/character/time period to present to the entire class. Please note that some of the resources that will be used in this course come from DVD collections that are “For the adult collector and may be offensive to children” (which include the Woody Woodpecker cartoons as well as shorts from The Animation Show). All films, though, will be thoroughly discussed and there will be no R-rated films shown in this class.
