Boys Beat Warrenton
to
Clinch League and Win
Trip to State Playoffs
The boys' varsity basketball team won an exciting 42-38 contest against Warrenton on Thursday night. The boys were down five points in the fourth quarter but then came back for a win, which mightily pleased the crowd. The victory gives them top rank in the league and a guaranteed spot in the state playoffs. They will play a district game at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 20, at Pacific University to determine their seeding for the first round of state play on February 27.
Girls Play Catlin on Monday
The girls lost their game to Warrenton last night but will come back on Monday night to face Catlin Gabel in the first round of district playoffs. The game will be played at Catlin and will cost $3 for students and $5 for adults. Good luck, girls!
Three Special Things Happened
- "Senior Night" honored players in their last year with flowers and ovations before the game.
- "Those Guys," the boys' a cappella singing group, performed an amazing rendition of "Star Spangled Banner" before the boys' game.
- A group of Second Grade boys played an exhibition game during halftime.

Bruce Browne |
|
Two special guests visited Upper School Concert Choir practices this week. On Monday, the students rehearsed with Bruce Browne, an internationally-renowned conductor who was head of choral studies and conducting at Portland State for many years. On Tuesday, well-known choral music composer and conductor Ivan Moody directed the choir. "It is incredibly useful for the choir to work with another conductor," said director Adam Steele. "These guests hear the music in a different way, offer different perspectives on the music, and hopefully reach the singers in a new way." |

Read the Book, Meet the Author
Did you ever finish reading a book and want to ask the author a question about it? Sixth-graders had that opportunity this week after finishing Colibri, a story about a Central American girl. Author Ann Cameron went into every Sixth Grade humanities classroom and talked with the students. Students made up questions in advance about metaphors, characters, and the author’s 20 years in Guatemala.
After one class, Mrs. Cameron told teacher Becky Tooley, “I’m so impressed with the depth of the questions your children asked.” At right, she talks with David S. '16 and Aaron L.. '16. |

Jazz Combo Brings
Vibes to the Elders
Last Saturday the Middle School Jazz Combo performed for the residents of Laurel Parc at Bethany Village, an assisted living community. According to drummer Grace C., the real crowd-pleasers were When the Saints go Marching In and Chattanooga Choo Choo. After the performance, the girls talked with members of the audience and discovered that many had been professional musicians, including an 85-year-old woman who still plays the trombone. The next time the combo performs at Laurel Parc, they plan to feature her on In the Mood. |
