OES Musicians and Artists
Join Together to Raise Funds
For Haiti Earthquake Relief

Professional musicians and student groups will join together on Tuesday, February 16, for a public concert to benefit Medical Teams International. Visual artists will contribute works for an art sale in the Great Hall before the concert in the gym, with all proceeds donated to MTI.

Plan to come early and share a Mardis Gras pancake dinner in the Dining Hall, donated by Bon Apetit, which provides OES dining services. Dinner reservations must be made by Friday, February 12, and dinner/concert tickets can be charged to a student account or purchased in the OES Gallery Store for a minimum donation of $5 for students, $10 for adults, or $25 for a family. Concert-only tickets can be purchased by credit card for $5 students and $10 adults.

The 6:30 p.m. concert will feature:

  • The Patrick Lamb Band
  • Allen Mathews, guitar
  • Nancy Teskey, flute
  • Wendy Steele, voice
  • Joanna Blendulf, cello
  • Sue Jensen, harpsichord

Seniors Whip Faculty 177-142 in Hoop

Seniors faced off against faculty from all three divisions, and although they didn't outshoot the teachers, they won anyway because of their generosity, which in this contest counted for points. Each team started the game with a point for every $10 it had raised to benefit Run for Congo Women, so the score at the beginning of the game was 152-73 in favor of the seniors. The final score of the game was seniors 177, faculty 142. Fundraising before the game totaled $2,200 and gate receipts will be added to that. Jenni VanderWeele ’10 organized the senior fundraising, and the Portland Basketball Officials Association donated referees. The MVP of the game was varsity girls’ soccer coach Scott Thompson.

Nobu to Take Pens and Pencils to Uganda

Nobu Tomiuga '10 is going on a Winterim trip to Uganda, where students will tutor children in an orphanage. He decided to carry along some school supplies for the children, so he started picking up pens and pencils that he found on the floor, and he asked the custodians to save for him any they find. So far he has collected more than 550 pencils and pens, and he has put a box in the Great Hall where anyone can donate pens, pencils, crayons, color pencils, or small pencil sharpeners. “This will definitely make the children in Uganda happy,” Nobu said.

Sydney Gives Teddy Bears
A Ride to Shriners Hospital

Sydney Romine-Black '14 has delivered the teddy bears to Shriners Children's Hospital just in time for some of them to go to victims of the Haiti crisis who are being treated there. Sydney has had several stays at the hospital and wanted to provide comfort to other children who are hospitalized there. Middle School students helped her collect bears in good condition, and Sydney made the delivery. Sydney’s mother, Rita, said, “We are grateful for all those from the OES community that donated. Thank you!”
