Fairies Can Find Cozy Homes Throughout the School

The children in Chris Thompson’s Kindergarten class enjoyed creating sculptures inspired by artist Andy Goldsworthy, and they hoped animals would come live in some of their sculptures. Then they realized that it is also important for fairies to have a place to live, so they built fairy houses out of natural and manmade materials and placed them in strategic locations throughout OES where fairies are likely to be found. A map on the door of each division shows where to find the fairy houses in that building. For the tooth fairy, they made a house with a hammock because she needs to rest during the day after working so hard at night.

Old Girls and New Girls
Get Together for Tea

Last Sunday the senior girls hosted a tea for the alumnae of St. Helen’s Hall at Trinity Cathedral. Tea party guests donned fancy tea party hats and practiced their etiquette, while sharing memorabilia from The Hall, which later became OES, and stories about current life at the school. The original Old Girl – New Girl Tea was a St. Helen’s Hall tradition in which the newcomers to the school were welcomed by the senior girls. This year was the third year of the now-annual twist on the tradition. At right are Winnifred Pembroke Wiemer Shaw JC '35 with Jenni V. '10 and Saskia I. '10. See more photos.

Senior Receives Highest Scouting Award

Kerry S. '10 was awarded the Gold Award by the Girl Scouts in a ceremony last weekend. The requirements for the Gold Award include completing a project that requires leadership, determination, perseverance and creativity. Among the family and friends at Kerry's ceremony were many folks from OES and her brother Cole, who graduated in 2006 and who gave a speech praising Kerry's accomplishments. The Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouts.

Middle School
Girls Are Strong
And Assertive

A group of eighth-grade girls recently completed the GirlStrength program, which focuses on empowering girls. Over the course of eight weeks, girls learn about the importance of trusting their intuition, being assertive, safety planning, and physical self-defense skills. GirlStrength is a free program for middle school girls run through the Portland Police Bureau.
