Aardvarks Play Quarterfinal Game Saturday at OES

The OES Boys' Varsity Soccer Team will face off against Delphian at 3:00 p.m. Saturday on the OES field in the state quarterfinal game in the 3A/2A/1A Division. Because it's an OSAA-sanctioned playoff game, an entry fee of $6 for adults and $4 for students will be charged, but the OES Athletic Department will cover the cost for OES students and faculty. The team placed second in the district, with Ben D. '10 named player of the year. Sam O. '10 was named to the All-League First Team, and named to the Second Team were Dennis S. '10, Peter W. '10, Will B. '11, and Jordan P. '10. Come and support the team, or follow the state playoffs on the OSAA bracket.

MS Girls Soccer Team Experienced 'Magical Week'

The Middle School Girls' "Blue" soccer team came from behind to finish as the league runner-up. The girls entered the playoffs seeded last among six teams. However, they beat the number three seed 4-0 and the number one seed 2-0 before falling to Kingsway 4-2 in the final game. Afterward Coach David Levine said, "It was a magical run, truly one of the best weeks I’ve had in 15 years of coaching." Way to go, girls!

Junior Selected for Role
In Portland Center Stage Play

Connor J. '11 has been selected to act in the upcoming production of Snow Falling on Cedars by Portland Center Stage. He will play the role of "Will," a character who was not in the novel but was created for the theater interpretation of the book by David Guterson. The play involves relations among the people of a Puget Sound island in the aftermath of the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Connor has a special affinity for the story because when his grandmother was his age, she was interned in one of the camps. The show will run from January 12 through February 2, and tickets are available through the Portland Center Stage box office.

Fourth-graders
Return Stares
From Insects

Fourth-graders gathered some leaf litter in the woods and found a whole lot of bugs living in it. First they sorted out the bigger specimens like spiders and worms, then used microscopes to examine little specks, which turned out to be alive. Science teacher Jane Kenney-Norberg says Lower School students have been surveying the insects in the OES woods for seven years and have seen fluctuations in the numbers of insects. For instance, this year there are a whole lot of ticks, she said. Don't worry about meeting the monster in the picture at left above. That beetle is a specimen from Ecuador that was brought in by parent Jim Atwood, who also kindly provided the photographs.

Pot of Gold Found
In Lower School

At pickup time on Wednesday, parents were greeted by a stunning double rainbow that formed a bridge from the Lower School to the Upper School. Intrepid students were unable to find the pot of gold, which appeared to be in the vicinity of the Lower School Library.
